This city’s builders have won two of the three categories of residential property in the recent provincial housing awards, including all three finalist spots in each of these groupings.

At the BILD Alberta Awards 2021, which took place virtually at the end of September, Carriage Signature Homes won the Estate Home Award of $ 800,000 to $ 1 million, and Vicky’s Homes won Estate Homes over $ 1 million.

Carriage competed with two different Vicky’s Homes offerings, and Vicky’s Homes faced competition from Habitat Studio and another of its own homes in the over $ 1 million segment.

However, Edmonton was excluded from the other Estate Home Award, which went to Crystal Creek Homes of Calgary for $ 600,000 to $ 800,000 Estate Home – all of these finalists were Calgary based.

“Our team is very excited about the award and recognition for the house in Keswick on the River,” said Gary Höft, President and General Manager of Carriage.

The house, a reverse workspace called Giovanni, on just over 2,000 square meters, is described as an entertainer’s dream and has an elevator.

In order to take advantage of the view of the river valley, Höft said it just made sense to place the strike in front of the house instead of the traditional views to the rear that came with it. The kitchen includes double islands and is a black and white show stopper, while there is a BBQ porch at the back.

The exterior of the house is kept in the prairie style, while the interior combines a feeling of transition with a contemporary flair.

This is the second award this year for the Giovanni, won in mid-June at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association – Edmonton Region 2021 Awards of Excellence for Best Single Family – Any Style Model ($ 700,000- $ 850,000).
Similarly, Vicky’s Verity III, who won the BILD Alberta Award for Estate Home Over 1 Million, also won the CHBA-ER 2021 Awards, where she won over $ 1.5 million in the Best Single Family – Any Style category won.

“We tend to have one or more listings in this category as we are known for our custom / estate homes in this price range,” said Vicky Kujundzic, owner of Vicky’s Homes. “Winning this award is a reminder that we are achieving our goals of incredible design and customer satisfaction. We have won this award several times at the local level, although we have already won at the provincial level, it is certainly difficult because the competition from all over the province is extremely fierce. “

The Verity III, over 4,700 square feet, is contemporary in style, has two rooftop terraces, has its own steam shower with a window to enjoy panoramic views of the canyon, and comes with a two-foot-high kitchen sink with two Faucets, two soap pumps and two garburators.

Rate hike

While the Edmonton real estate market has had mixed success over the years, builders see its future bright.

“The real estate market continues to grow, more than ever,” said Kujundzic. “Entrepreneurs / business owners, medical professionals and high net worth clients in the tech and internet sectors, and even those who are fed up with all of the COVID restrictions are coming to build with us. With COVID and all of the leisure center closures, more and more people are wanting more amenities like indoor pools in their new homes.

Meanwhile, Carriage’s Hoeft said they are seeing “upward momentum” and there is a growing market for real estate homes in the $ 2.5 million to $ 4 million range.

“The shift we’re seeing in the real estate market is that it is definitely moving to the infill side,” Höft said, noting that this is due to discerning buyers who want certain locations.

“It (the real estate market) was almost non-existent in the 1980s and 90s, but then we saw a turning point in the late 90s and early 2000s,” adds Trevor Hoover, senior designer and partner at Habitat Studio, whose Tian Yi contributor was Finalist in the BILD Awards for Estate Home Over $ 1 Million. “I feel like it was pretty widespread until 2008, but then it went down a bit, as did everything related to construction. Today I don’t think it’s a huge market in Edmonton. I would think Calgary is building more “estate” houses than Edmonton and the surrounding area, but we definitely have some great homes with great people here in Edmonton. “

What is an Estate Home?

Builders with whom Postmedia spoke agreed that it was the details that count. It takes more time, thought, and effort to make the end result look, feel, and work, Habitat Studio said. Similarly, Vicky’s Homes said that there are so many more design elements, upgrades, and details that make it special. Carriage Signature Homes said their carpenter’s job was so good that he was considered an artist.
