Dozens of Latter-day Saints Church of Jesus Christ volunteers collected long-life groceries from households across town on Saturday.

The aim is to exceed the previous year’s total of 59,000 kilograms of food.

“The LDS congregation flew home last week – and now they are picking it up and the results are amazing,” said Tamisan Bencz-Knight of the Edmonton Food Bank.

“The demand doesn’t need a vacation. We serve people all year round. “

“The first year it started off quietly with a few thousand pounds of food and last year it grew to 220,000 pounds of food,” said Chantelle McMullin of Latter-day Saint Church of Jesus Christ. “It’s one of the few trips where we come to your door and pick it up.”

The City-Wide Food Drive event is already in its eighth year.

“The Edmonton Chalkboard is very happy that there are thousands upon thousands of people supporting them and this is just a community, one way that Edmonton supports us,” said Bencz-Knight.

“If your neighbor needs help, help,” said McMullin. “We try to do good in the community”

Donations to the Food Bank are always accepted in their warehouse as well as in local grocery stores and fire halls.
