Well, according to the Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Edmonton Region Awards of Excellence, there are two different but similar options.

Both Lake Summerside and Woodhaven Edgemont place great importance on enjoying the outdoors, but they are at completely different stages in their life cycle.

Brookfield Residential’s Lake Summerside is virtually complete with only a few lots left. Woodhaven Edgemont from Rohit Communities, on the other hand, is still relatively young and opened its doors in 2019.

Summerside contains Edmonton’s first and only freshwater recreational lake in the parish. Meanwhile, no house in Woodhaven is more than 100 meters away from a natural canyon, rain pond or leisure area.

Both were recognized as the two top communities at the CHBA-ER Awards 2021 on June 19. Lake Summerside was named Best Community and Woodhaven Edgemont was named Best New Community for the second year in a row.

Embedded in nature

Kevyn Serediak and his girlfriend Myane Lachance wanted to be in town without feeling like they were in town.
Even with two larger dogs, a husky and a golden retriever, nature was important to them.

That’s why they’re building Edgemont in Woodhaven, which is surrounded on three sides by multi-purpose paths along Wedgewood Creek.

They were looking for a larger lot, partly so as not to have the dense feel that some suburbs had – they thought of acreage but decided against it.

“We found our dream property,” said Serediak, adding that they also found a beautiful home that they both liked. Turns out that was the Park Royal Homes’ Marcus, a two-story attached garage home that the couple expect to be ready by the end of this year. You look forward to the house’s open concept and a wall of windows with a view of the gorge.

Woodhaven, which was also named Best Website / Mobile App and Best Print Advertising at the CHBA-ER Awards, is well received by buyers, said Marty Pawlina, Marketing Manager at Rohit Land Development.

“We had incredible momentum and that’s why we started a new phase earlier than expected,” he said, adding that Woodhaven’s connection with nature and Rohit’s passion for building communities where people thrive are likely reasons for the best new ones Community winning streak are.

For Serediak and Lachance, the fact that Woodhaven won the Best New Community award helped them realize that this is the place where they can build their future.

“It helped us know we chose the right community,” said the couple. “If others think this is the best place to live … then it has to be the right decision.”

There are seven builders in Woodhaven who build one and two-family houses.

The beach is calling

Local real estate agent Rhonda Navratil showed a client a house in Lake Summerside over the long weekend in July. A week later, it was Navratil who made the Summerside purchase.

She took her client to the community beach club and felt like she was in a resort.

“I came over there and said, ‘Oh, it’s a bit like Kelowna, but in Edmonton – I love it!’ “Said Navratil, who then wondered how quickly she could get her own place there. The decision was made within a week.

“The lake was a big draw,” said Navratil. “I loved the whole idea of the beach, the lake and the life by the water,
and I think that’s what most people in the church wear. “

That was in 2006. She has never regretted it and loves the country house lifestyle.

Since then, she has moved three more – all in Summerside – including one to get a lakefront property that wasn’t available when she first bought it.

“The people who live in the area tend to stay in the area,” added Navratil, noting that the community was built with moving options, from starter homes to residential homes. “Not only that, they then bring their friends and family and get them to buy a house in the area because they want to stay here.”

However, the municipality’s lake and its recreational activities are only accessible to local residents.

“Lake Summerside will forever be the first community of its kind for Brookfield Residential and Edmonton,” said Charlene Barrett, director of customer and business development for Brookfield. “Before we started building in 1999, our vision was to create the best home with a freshwater lake.”

This, Barrett noted, was an idea never before made in Edmonton.

“It took a whole team of engineers, environmental scientists, and architects to build the lake, which took over three months to fill,” added Barrett. “It is such a unique honor that Lake Summerside was named Best Community by CHBA Edmonton, and the legacy of this special place will last for years.”
