Edmonton won Best Community Category at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association National Awards for Housing Excellence last week.

The Village at Griesbach in northern Edmonton was named Best New Parish, while Chappelle Gardens in the Southwest received the only other award in this category, this one for Best Growing Parish.

Edmonton builders and developers also received four other awards at the virtual 2021 event – as last year due to the pandemic. In total there were more than 700 submissions in 53 different categories. The awards recognize outstanding achievements in the areas of new construction, renovation, community development and housing marketing. The finalists and winners were selected by a group of nearly 200 judges made up of industry experts from across Canada.

“It was amazing to be just one finalist because there are only some amazing communities across Canada selected to win the (best) community award,” said Marvin Neumann, senior director, real estate at Canada Lands Co., the developer behind the successful North Side.

Griesbach, on the site of the former Canadian Forces Base Edmonton and in transition to a master-planned, mixed-use district, has now received an award for the best community at local (CHBA Edmonton Region), provincial (BILD Alberta) and national level .

“To win a national award, wow, that’s just amazing!” Added Neumann, who also congratulated Brookfield Residential, the developer of Chappelle Gardens.

“They are obviously on the south side, we are at the north end, so that’s a nice balance for the city,” said Neumann.

“We are honored that Chappelle Gardens was named the best growing community in all of Canada. This not only reflects how we shape our communities with our residents in mind, but also the fact that our vision will be embraced by everyone who lives there, ”said Mike Kohl, Brookfield’s vice president, Edmonton Operations. “It really is a unique community and I am proud that our team here in Edmonton has been recognized for this.”

Neumann believes that the quality of Griesbach’s furnishings, the houses and the variety of products built, the architecture and the accessible location all played a role in the profit.

Over in Chappelle, Brookfield found three show homes that opened last fall – Hudson, Eton, and Finlay – were also recognized as finalists in those awards. Brookfield also won for Best Short Video.

“We were also delighted to win a marketing award for our #StayHome short video,” said Raegan Sather, Senior Marketing Manager at Brookfield. “It’s a beautifully crafted video about the importance of staying home during this time of COVID and how we care deeply about the importance of home.”

Meanwhile, three other Edmonton builders – Accent Infills, North Pointe Homes, and Vicky’s Homes – received trophies.

Accent won 2,101 square feet to 2,400 square feet for Best Freestanding Manufacturing House.

“There’s always something special about being recognized by your peers, and winning a national design award is incredible,” said Jeff Knowlton, President and General Manager of Accent. “We are overjoyed about this award and I am so proud of the work that our team and our trading partners do every day to set ourselves apart from others.”

Interestingly, all of the finalists for this award were from Alberta, with four of the five from Edmonton – Accent had two properties but won for The Capital, one from North Pointe and one from San Rufo Homes.

North Pointe also won in the same category, but in the next tier, for a freestanding production house of 2,401 sq. ft. to 2,800 sq. ft.

“It’s special because it’s judged by your peers in the industry,” said Darcy Fett, owner and president of North Pointe. “The architectural styles are so different across the country – in the different zones – that it is nice to have a project that is recognized and appeals to a wide range.”

North Pointe’s winning entry, The Aurora, incorporates elements of the Modern Farmhouse on the outside, which Bold is currently very popular, and said the third floor loft and covered terrace are a unique take on the upper level.

And Vicky’s Homes won the award for the best bathroom over 130 sq. ft.

“Just being recognized as a national finalist is an accomplishment; winning when you go up against the best in the nation tells us we’re doing a lot of things right,” said Vicky Kujundzic, owner of Vicky’s Homes.

What made this bathroom so special, said Kujundzic, is in the details.

“This ensuite bathroom had a perfect balance of color, texture and functionality. The luxurious heated towel rails, bespoke heater cover and rimless bespoke shower have created a quality space that is conducive to aging, ”added Kujundzic.

Other winners in Alberta came primarily from Calgary, including Deanmark Developments, Douglas Homes, and Trico Homes. Ultimate Renovations, which serves both Edmonton and Calgary, received three renovation awards for its Calgary work, while Reborn Renovations of Calgary also received one renovation award. Creek Stone Fine Homes of Okotoks was the other winner in Alberta. The full list of winners is available on chba.ca.

Virtual versus live

Here’s what a local builder had to say about the difference between live award shows and their virtual versions:
“Nothing is nicer than to be there live at the awards ceremony,” said Vicky Kujundzic, owner of Vicky’s Homes. “As with most companies in our industry, we miss the social aspect of awards; On these evenings we can literally pause and smell the roses and take in the atmosphere of an awards ceremony to really appreciate the awards given to our great homes, created by our great team. But given our current circumstances, second best is having them online. A bonus for the online awards: Now any of our employees can follow the announcements of the awards and join in the excitement from anywhere: in the office, at home or on site. “
