Can Man Dan helps Edmonton households get again to highschool with free backpacks and provides
One of Edmonton’s most prominent can-do philanthropists is back in time for school.
In partnership with the Can Man Dan Foundation, Dan Johnstone hosted his eighth annual We’re Here For Ya Day event on Sunday in three locations in Edmonton, bringing families everything from free backpacks and school supplies to grocery baskets, toiletries and free haircut coupons.
More than 2,300 low-income men, women and children attended the event last year, Johnstone said in a press release on Sunday.
“Back to school can be such an expensive time of year for families, especially when the budget is limited,” said Johnstone. “I want the Edmontonians to know I’ve got their backs.”
Raised by a single parent in a low-income household, Johnstone knows firsthand how difficult the back-to-school season can be for families in trouble.
“It’s my duty, it really is. For years this town, various social programs, and even complete strangers have taken care of my family and me, and now it’s time for me to keep the ball rolling, ”said Johnstone. “Every year this event gets bigger and bigger, and it’s costing more and more to finance, but at the end of the day it’s definitely worth it. It is a pleasure for the Foundation to host this event every year, and when I see thousands of smiles on the faces of happy children, I know it was all worth it. “
Johnstone is known for his long winter camps collecting food, toys and donations for Edmonton’s Food Bank and Santas Anonymous.
